So, what do I need to know about furniture and upholstery cleaning?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

“But my furniture doesn’t have a spot on it! Isn’t that clean enough?”

Not at all.

Even when stains are not visible, upholstery carries bacteria that, if not removed, can potentially affect your health. These bacteria can cause sickness, so the sooner you invest in professional upholstery cleaning, the better off you’ll be. Upholstery cleaning improves the air quality in your home, removing mold, dust, mildew, and other allergens that can go unnoticed. Regular, professional furniture cleaning can prevent pollutants from spreading through the air and into your body.

Yikes! How are you able to get that out?

Professional upholstery cleaning is a multi-step process.

It starts with a physical inspection and, if necessary, a pre-treatment. Then technicians will apply an upholstery cleaning solution the fabric to help loosen embedded dirt. Next, they will use an extraction process to remove the cleaning solution. The final step is a physical inspection to make sure the upholstery is clean. Art Van CleanTeam offers a fabric protection treatment to help prevent future stains and life of your furniture.

Furniture is an expensive investment! Keeping it in excellent condition will ensure that you enjoy it for many years and get the most out of every piece. “Do-it-yourselfers” may be inclined to save money by cleaning furniture on their own, but this can cause more harm than good. Technicians certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) should be the only ones you let clean your furniture.

Art Van Clean Team technicians know how to handle all types of fabric. Our experience is essential for determining the best method for your fabric types.  This is particularly helpful when treating furniture made from delicate or rare materials. Fabrics like silk can be easily damaged by the wrong treatment method, so expert assistance is highly recommended for proper treatment. Our cleaning technicians have learned how to identify fabrics, understand how they are made, how to approach treatment properly and how to identify potential problems.

But what about chemicals?

Art Van CleanTeam uses eco-friendly cleaning solutions: Over-the-counter treatment chemicals often contain toxic components. Using these products may put children or pets in the home at great risk. Children playing on or around the furniture may inhale or ingest the chemical residue, while pets could ingest the chemical when sleeping or being groomed on the furniture.

Won’t my furniture be wet for days, though?

Art Van Clean Team technicians use quick drying processes that are safe and  convenient. Our professional equipment has the suctioning power to ensure the technician is free to use plenty of water without worrying about whether the upholstery will wind up too damp. During cleaning, excess water usage is one of the biggest mistakes an inexperienced person can make. Too much water will soak the fabric and padding, thus prolonging drying time. This can risk the growth of mold or mildew, which can result in serious health problems. Did you know mold and mildew can start in just two days of dampness? Professional quick drying minimizes the possibility of the fabric shrinking and bleeding, a common problem when untrained individuals clean furniture.

But can’t I clean my furniture myself? After all, it’s just upholstery.

Furniture is a large investment for most people, so consider the following if tackling the job yourself: how are your operator skills? How well do you gauge how much cleaning solution to apply?  How has that piece of DIY rental machinery been cared for and maintained?

The short is that, yes, you technically can clean your furniture yourself, but we’d hate to see an accident occur, or the equipment you’re using break down or ruin your furniture! We love cleaning, and with the Art Van CleanTeam, you know that your furniture is in professional hands, and that you got the most through cleaning ever!

What else do I need to know about cleaning my upholstery? And what are these tags?

Upholstery should be marked with a code that allows the buyer to know what type of cleaning is suggested. Cleaning codes on your favorite couch or chair are typically found under the seat cushions (assuming they are detachable) on the platform (the part the cushions sit on). If you do not find the cleaning code on the platform, check all tags that might be attached to the piece. If you removed them upon purchase, typically, this information is available on the company’s website/product page.

W” this piece of furniture can be cleaned with water. This is the most durable type of fabric you can buy & is ideal for furniture that will see a high volume of use or spills.

S” this piece of furniture MUST be cleaned with cleaning solvents (dry clean only) and will not react well if water is applied. NOTE: Do not allow your piece to become extremely dirty. Stains, spills, or dirt in general should be cleaned as soon as possible to ensure the longevity of the colors and fabric.  Art Van CleanTeam is one of only a few companies that clean dry-clean only furniture!

S/W” This code means a combination of dry cleaning solvents and water can be used. It is not often seen and is best left to the professionals to clean with this code.

X” This code isn’t often seen anymore, but when it does appear it means the items is NOT cleanable and is vacuum-only!
